We are thrilled to showcase another feature in the latest issue of Grace Ormonde. This surreal art inspired birthday celebration was a spectacular party to be included in! With the theme of “Surreal at Sixty” – this event that included cocktails, dinner and an afterparty delighted guests from beginning to end. Marc Friedland and Matthew David Hopkins came together to create this unparalleled level of creativity that can only stem from an 18-year friendship. Our client wanted to provide guests with an unmatched experience and it turned out to be just that and more.Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, the dynamic duo approached this event with the intention of creating a fully immersive experience for guests. The idea behind the party’s design was heavily guided by surrealism and the goal of transporting guests into another world where they could “expect the unexpected.”
Upon arrival, guests were greeted by Dietrich Dames and Dapper Gentlemen. The front entrance was hedged off and the neon sign “Dali’s Den of Delight” aroused curiosity. A violinist was atop the marble staircase wearing a red gown with a dramatic train that cascaded down the stairs. Two dapper gentlemen were standing outside the multi-layered drapery entrance to usher guests in the foyer. Cocktail hour was a sensory overload with two custom walls painted in gold with medallions and cut outs where white gloves hands were exposed carrying champagne flutes to serve the guests. Lounge areas were setup around the room, featuring beautiful items like our Prague Sofa in red.
We draped an over the top red fabric tunnel with black monkey chandeliers and sconces for the guests formal entrance to the dining room. When time came for the guests to move to the second phase of the dining room, they were lead by a band and upon entrance the guests jaws dropped in sheer surprise. The dining room was a visual and sensory feast.
Long Chandelier Tables had custom gold framed with red roses coming down. Tables had the flowers in deep colors bearing fruits. Black candelabras and candles added to the glamour. Each place setting was dressed with black custom made charger with the guest’s name in gold. We. provided three sets of chairs with custom red fabric options in our Washington Dining Chair with Heart Frame, Washington Dining Chair with Queen Frame, and Washington Dining Chair.
As a three-course dinner was served over a span of two hours, guests were treated to one incredible form of entertainment after another. For each course—or “movement”—the waiters’ costumes, live performers and visuals were coordinated to match the storyline that was unfolding. Even the famous Rockettes appeared in lobster costumes for a showstopping performance during the “Nautical New Wave” dinner movement, which was lobster served in a watermelon. To conclude the meal, a synchronized confetti blast by the 40 waiters took place around all 160 guests. Prized wines and champagne from a private collection were served and in short guests experienced a night unlike any other.
